July 2024

Fourth of July.  The Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day, is celebrated in the United States to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. This historic document declared the thirteen American colonies' independence from British rule.

Independence Day is marked by various patriotic events and activities, such as fireworks, parades, concerts, barbecues, and family gatherings. It’s a day to celebrate American history, culture, and traditions.

The Fourth of July is a day of national pride and a reminder of the values of freedom and independence upon which the United States was founded. With that said, the Mayor and members of the City Council invite you and your families to attend the City's Annual Fourth of July Celebration featuring an amazing firework display that can be enjoyed by all from anywhere along the majestic Bandon coastline. Special thanks to the Port of Bandon and the Coquille Tribe for granting the City access to the site where the fireworks will be launched.

National Night Out.  National Night Out (NNO) is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to create safer and more caring places to live. NNO was first introduced in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), a non-profit organization dedicated to the development and promotion of various crime prevention programs, including neighborhood watch groups. Held on the first Tuesday of August, it involves millions of neighbors across thousands of communities from all fifty states, U.S. territories, and military bases worldwide.

The City's NNO event will take place on Tuesday, August 6th, from 5-8pm at City Park. The event will include a barbecue with free hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, sodas, and ice cream for all attendees while supplies last. A music DJ, inflatable rides, face painting, and various other activities will be available for children of all ages. As in years past, the featured attraction, however, will be the dunk tank.

Public safety representatives from other law enforcement agencies, along with selected members of the community, collaborated with the Bandon Police Department to plan the event. The Coast Guard is expected to land one of their helicopters in City Park, while K9s from the Coos County Sheriff's Office will be on display. There will also be a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses, such as bicycles and gift certificates.

The City is hopeful that NNO will be successful in strengthening neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, enhancing the quality of life in Bandon, and increasing citywide crime prevention awareness.

Ferry Creek Dredging Project Update.  City staff is pleased to report that the City has recently obtained all the necessary approvals to dredge sediment from the Ferry Creek reservoir. This work is necessary to increase the City's raw water storage capacity. Raw water is treated to produce potable drinking water at the City's water facility situated above the impoundment. Potable water is distributed to households and businesses citywide through the City's expansive water system.

The dredging project will be completed in stages, starting with the clearing of trees and the construction of a temporary access road for use by dredging equipment and hauling trucks. Removed trees will be sold to help reduce project costs. The dredging project is scheduled to be completed by the end of July or the beginning of August.
